“Kitchen is no place for kids” said my mother as she shooed me away from her exclusive preserve. This often made me wonder what it held, for delicious dishes came out of it. One early morning mom had to go to the airport to receive my father. She told my elder sister to prepare breakfast as she could be late. My sister woke me up, to help her prepare breakfast, while she freshened up. This was the opportunity I had been waiting for. Stepping inside the kitchen, I took in the sight before me—there were cabinets rising high like skyscrapers, the oven occupied a majestic place beside the wall, the dishes were sparkling like diamonds on the shelf. To help my sister prepare breakfast, I decided to make an omelette.
I knew the basics, for I had seen mom do it. I took one egg and an onion. While chopping the onion on the chopping board, disaster struck and I bruised my finger. Thankfully there was no bleeding. After a few minutes of whining, I got back to work. The egg awaited its fate, to be cracked in half. The chilli powder and the salt were next. I saw the jars on the top shelf of the cabinet. I jumped to catch them, making them fall and spill on the floor before me. Quickly I salvaged as much as I could, leaving the rest on the floor.
Putting the egg and the ingredients in the bowl, I whisked it vigorously. Lighting the stove, I put the big frying pan on it and poured some oil in. I then gently poured the batter into the pan, and heaved a sigh of relief. Everything was going on fine. It was however a fallacy. Soon I was frantically searching for the spatula to turn the batter over—all the while, the omelette lay sizzling in the pan. I found it on the shelf behind me and managed to turn the omelette, only to see a rather burnt, side up.
The stink that I had raised, bought my sister scurrying into the kitchen. Fearing reprimand, I mutter that I was only trying to help her prepare breakfast. She was angry seeing the mess I had made in the kitchen. As punishment she made me clean up the mess and eat the burnt omelette.
While eating the omelette, I realised it wasn’t as bad as it looked. My first cooking experience had turned out to be a disaster and I had got the taste of my own medicine. I was however happy, for in the process I had learnt an important lesson—to prepare beforehand, before undertaking a task—be it cooking or anything in life.
Understanding This Composition
The opening creates curiosity
The kitchen is introduced as a mysterious place from which delicious dishes appear. That immediately gives the narrator a personal reason for wanting to enter it and try cooking.
The incident develops through a chain of problems
The narrative moves from one difficulty to another: the bruised finger, spilled ingredients, the missing spatula and the burnt omelette. These connected events create progression instead of a flat description of cooking.
The sister’s arrival becomes the turning point
The smell of the burnt omelette brings the sister into the kitchen. The narrator must now face the consequence of the attempt: cleaning the mess and eating the burnt omelette.
The conclusion answers what was gained
The prompt specifically asks what the narrator gained from the experience. The final paragraph therefore completes the task by drawing a broader lesson about preparing properly before undertaking something.
