Perimeter: The distance covered along the boundary forming a closed figure when you go around the figure once. Perimeter can be calculated as the length of boundary.
A closed figure in which all sides and angles are equal is called a regular polygon.

Perimeter of a rectangle:
Perimeter of a rectangle = length + breadth + length + breadth
So, Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 × (length + breadth)
Perimeter of regular shapes:
Figures in which all sides and angles are equal are called regular closed figures.
Example: Square, equilateral triangle, pentagon etc.
Perimeter of a square = 4 × length of a side.
Perimeter of an equilateral triangle = 3 × length of a side
Perimeter of a regular pentagon = 5 × length of one side
Area: Amount of surface enclosed by a closed figure.
The amount of surface enclosed by a closed figure is called its area.
To estimate the area of a figure by counting squares, the following conventions are adopted:
• Ignore portions of the area that are less than half a square.
• If more than half a square is in a region. Count it as one square.
• If exactly half the square is counted, take its area as 1/2 sq. units.
Such a convention gives a fair estimate of the desired area.
Area of a Rectangle:
Area of a rectangle = (length × breadth)
Area of a Square:
Area of the square = side × side
If the sides are in centimetre (cm), the unit of perimeter is also in centimetre. Similarly, if the sides are in meters (m), the unit of perimeter is also in meter.
