Nazism and the Rise of Hitler Class 9 Revision Notes CBSE History Chapter 3

Notes

  1. After Germany’s defeat in 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and fled to Netherlands. Thereafter, Germany became a republic and its new government ruled from Weimar, instead of Berlin.
  2. The National Assembly met at Weimar and established a democratic Constitution with a federal structure. The government was to be formed by universal adult suffrage.
  3. The Reichstag or Parliament had a system of proportional representation. This gave an opportunity to small parties to gain seats and destabilise the government.
  4. From 1919 to 1933 , Germany was known as the Weimar Republic. In the election of January 1919, Friedrich Ebert, a socialist, became its first President.
  5. The Weimar Republic faced problems from the very beginning. The extremism coming from the left as well as the right haunted the Weimar Republic throughout its career from 1919 to 1933 .
  6. Nazism was the German version of Fascism. It literally means dictatorship.
  7. The term ‘Nazism’ was derived from the name of the party which Hitler founded in 1921, the ‘National Socialist German Workers’ party, abbreviated to ‘Nazi’ party’.
  8. There were many political parties in Germany such as Nationalists, Royalists, Social Democrats, the Communists, etc.
  9. Democratic Government was in power in Germany. Party strife was at its height.
  10. The Royalists tried to gain power under the leadership of Kapp in 1920 and again under General Ludendorff in 1923. But they failed to achieve their objectives.
  11. In 1929 , the most serious economic crisis occurred which affected all the capitalist countries of the world. As a result of the crisis, eight million workers-about half of the working population of Germany-were rendered unemployed.
  12. The strength of the German forces was reduced by the Treaty of Versailles. As a result, thousands of trained and efficient soldiers were thrown out of employment.

Allies: The Allien powers were initially led by the UK and France. In 1941 they were joined by the USSR and the USA. They fought against the Axis powers, namely Germany, Italy and Japan. Nazis: Short form of ‘National Socialist German Workers’ party which was formed by Hitler. Mein Kampf: An autobiography written in prison by Hitler meaning ‘My Struggle’.
Dictator: A leader who has all the powers in his hand and leads his party according to his own plan and thought. He is not elected by the people.
Concentration Camps: Places (camps) where thousands of Jews were kept as prisoners without trial, and under terrible conditions.
Deplete: Reduce, empty out.
Reparation: Make up for a wrong done.
Genocidal: Killing on large scale leading to destruction of large sections of people.
Extermination Camps: Places (camps) where imprisoned Jews were killed in a horrible manner.
Utopian Socialists: People subscribing to a type of socialism that sought to establish a new society, in order to solve economic problems.
Reichstag: German Parliament.
Axis Powers: Three countries-Germany, Italy and Japan-were collectively known as the Axis powers.

  • January 27, 1945 : Soviet troops liberate Auschwitz.
  • May 8, 1945 : Allied victory in Europe.
