Assertion Reason on Reproduction in Animals

Questions:

Q.1. Assertion (A): In production of offspring, formation of zygote is necessary.
Reason (R): There are two modes of reproduction occur.
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of assertion (A)
(c) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ans. Option (d) is correct.
Explanation: There are two modes of reproduction in animals i.e. sexual and asexual reproduction. In sexual reproduction, a male and a female gamete (reproductive cells) fuse to form a single cell called zygote. This zygote gradually develops into an adult, similar to the parents. While in asexual reproduction only a single parent is involved. No fusion of gametes takes place to produce zygote.

Q.2. Assertion (A): Fertilisation can be external or internal.
Reason (R): The babies are born also through IVF technique.

Ans. Option (a) is correct.
Explanation: In IVF technique freshly released eggs and sperms are put together for a few hours, and in this technique fertilisation is external, the zygote is allowed to develop for about a week and then placed in the uterus of the mother for further development. Like IVF in some animals such as fish, starfish and amphibians (animals who live in water as well as on land such as frogs) fertilisation takes place outside the body. While in humans, dogs, cows, birds, etc, fertilisation takes place inside the body of the female.
