Case Study 1: Pressure in Daily Life

Megha and Pawan carried identical bags on a picnic. Megha’s bag had broad straps, while Pawan’s had narrow straps. Pawan’s shoulders hurt, though both bags weighed the same. The difference was due to pressure: the same force acting on a smaller area (narrow straps) produces greater pressure, causing more discomfort. Similarly, sharp knife edges or pointed nails are effective because they apply greater pressure on a smaller area.

Case Study 2: Air Pressure and Winds

Air all around us exerts pressure called atmospheric pressure. When you blow air between two balloons, they move closer because high-speed air creates a low-pressure region between them. Air always moves from high-pressure to low-pressure regions, forming winds. This principle also explains land and sea breezes: during the day, warm air over land rises, and cooler air from the sea rushes in, forming a sea breeze. At night, the process reverses, forming a land breeze.
