Case Study Questions on Kinetic Theory
Case Study: The Space Capsule Air Leak Emergency
In 2032, an international space mission experienced a critical situation when a tiny micro-meteorite punctured the outer hull of a space capsule. Though the hole was barely visible, astronauts reported a sudden drop in internal pressure. The onboard sensors showed that gas molecules inside were escaping rapidly into space.
The engineering team onboard quickly sealed off affected chambers. They estimated the rate of pressure drop using the kinetic theory of gases, focusing on mean free path, average kinetic energy, and molecular speed. Based on the room temperature and known gas constants, they calculated the root mean square (rms) speed of the escaping air molecules and used this data to control the leak.
Later, students studying this incident discussed the assumptions of the kinetic theory and its real-world relevance to air pressure, temperature, and molecular dynamics in near-vacuum conditions.
Questions
Q1. What does the kinetic theory of gases say about the pressure exerted by a gas on the walls of its container?
(a) It is caused by gravitational force between molecules
(b) It results from collisions of molecules with each other
(c) It results from collisions of molecules with the container walls
(d) It is due to intermolecular attraction
Show Answer
Answer: (c) It results from collisions of molecules with the container walls
Explanation: According to kinetic theory, gas molecules exert pressure by colliding elastically with the container walls.
Q2. What is the root mean square speed (vrms
) of air molecules related to?
(a) Only pressure
(b) Only density
(c) Only number of molecules
(d) Temperature and molar mass
Show Answer
Answer: (d) Temperature and molar mass
Explanation: vrms = √(3RT/M)
, where T
is temperature and M
is molar mass.
Q3. Which assumption of kinetic theory becomes invalid in the high-vacuum space environment near the capsule breach?
(a) Collisions between molecules are perfectly elastic
(b) There are no intermolecular forces
(c) Molecules are in constant, random motion
(d) The number of molecules is very large
Show Answer
Answer: (d) The number of molecules is very large
Explanation: In space near a leak, the number of gas molecules is drastically reduced, violating the assumption of a large number of particles.
Q4. Why was the temperature of the gas critical in estimating the leak rate?
(a) It affects the mass of the gas
(b) It controls molecular size
(c) It determines the average kinetic energy of the molecules
(d) It influences the shape of the hole
Show Answer
Answer: (c) It determines the average kinetic energy of the molecules
Explanation: Average kinetic energy of gas molecules is directly proportional to temperature: ⟨K.E.⟩ = (3/2)kBT
. Higher temperature means faster molecules and quicker pressure loss.
We hope the given case study questions for Kinetic Theory Class 11 helps you in your learning.
