Case Study Questions on Sets

Case Study:
In a school, students can participate in Chess club (\(C\)), Music club (\(M\)), or both. Out of 60 students, 32 participate in Chess club, 25 in Music club, and 10 participate in both.

Questions:

  1. How many students participate in exactly one of the two clubs?
  2. How many students do not participate in any club?
  3. Represent the above information using a Venn diagram (describe it in words).

Solutions:

1. Students in exactly one club:

\[ \text{Only Chess} = n(C) – n(C \cap M) = 32 – 10 = 22 \] \[ \text{Only Music} = n(M) – n(C \cap M) = 25 – 10 = 15 \] \[ \text{Total in exactly one club} = 22 + 15 = \boxed{37} \]

2. Students not in any club:

\[ n(C \cup M) = n(C) + n(M) – n(C \cap M) = 32 + 25 – 10 = 47 \] \[ \text{Not in any club} = 60 – 47 = \boxed{13} \]

3. Venn diagram description:

  • Draw two overlapping circles labeled \( C \) (Chess) and \( M \) (Music).
  • The overlapping part has 10 students (both clubs).
  • The part of \( C \) only has 22 students.
  • The part of \( M \) only has 15 students.
  • Outside both circles: 13 students (neither club).

We hope the given case study questions for Sets Class 11 helps you in your learning.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Sets Case Study Questions

Q1: What is a case study question in mathematics?

A1: A case study question in mathematics is a problem or set of problems based on a real-life scenario or application. It requires students to apply their understanding of mathematical concepts to analyze, interpret, and solve the given situation.

Q2: How should students tackle case study questions in exams?

A2: To tackle case study questions effectively, students should:
Read the problem carefully: Understand the scenario and identify the mathematical concepts involved.
Break down the problem: Divide the case study into smaller parts to manage the information better.
Apply relevant formulas and theorems: Use the appropriate mathematical tools to solve each part of the problem.

Q3: Why are case study questions included in the Class 11 Maths curriculum?

A3: Case study questions are included to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. They help students see the relevance of what they are learning and prepare them for real-life situations where they may need to use these mathematical concepts.
