Assertion Reason Questions on Polynomials

Directions:

In the questions given below, there are two statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R).
Read the statements carefully and choose the correct option:
(A) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
(B) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(C) A is true, but R is false.
(D) A is false, but R is true.

Q1. Assertion (A): The degree of the polynomial $f(x)=4 x^3-2 x^2+x-7$ is 3 .
Reason (R): The degree of a polynomial is the highest power of the variable in the expression.

Difficulty Level: Medium

Ans. Option (A) is correct.
Explanation: The degree is determined by the highest power of xxx, which is 3. The reason correctly explains the assertion.

Q2. Assertion (A): If $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial $x^2-7 x+10$, then $\alpha+\beta=7$ and $\alpha \beta=10$.
Reason (R): For a polynomial $a x^2+b x+c$, sum of zeroes $=-b / a$, and product $=c / a$.
Ans. Option (A) is correct.
Explanation: Using the identity, $\alpha+\beta=-(-7) / 1=7$, and $\alpha \beta=10 / 1=10$. The reason is the exact explanation.

Q5. Assertion (A): A linear polynomial can have at most one zero.
Reason (R): The graph of a linear polynomial is a straight line which intersects the x-axis at most once.
