Case Study Questions on Mechanical Properties of Fluids
Case Study Question 1
Passage:
A hydraulic lift works based on Pascal’s Law, which states that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted equally in all directions. In a garage, a car weighing 1500 kg is lifted using a small piston of area 0.02 m², connected to a larger piston of area 0.5 m².
Q1. What pressure is required on the smaller piston to lift the car?
(a) $2.94 \times 10^4 \mathrm{~Pa}$
(b) $4.41 \times 10^4 \mathrm{~Pa}$
(c) $7.35 \times 10^4 \mathrm{~Pa}$
(d) $1.47 \times 10^5 \mathrm{~Pa}$
Answer: (d)
Explanation:
$$
P=\frac{F}{A}=\frac{m g}{A}=\frac{1500 \times 9.8}{0.5}=29400 \mathrm{~N} / 0.5=1.47 \times 10^5 \mathrm{~Pa}
$$
Q2. What is the force that must be applied to the smaller piston?
(a) 294 N
(b) 1000 N
(c) 2940 N
(d) 3600 N
Answer: (a)
Explanation:
$$
F=P \times A=1.47 \times 10^5 \times 0.02=2940 \mathrm{~N}
$$
Q3. What does Pascal’s Law state?
(a) Pressure is proportional to area
(b) Pressure decreases with height
(c) Pressure at a point in an enclosed fluid is equal in all directions
(d) Pressure increases with temperature
Answer: (c)
Explanation:
Pascal’s Law → pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted equally in all directions.
Q4. Why is a hydraulic lift able to lift heavy cars with small force?
(a) Large displacement
(b) Gravitational field
(c) Area ratio of pistons
(d) Vacuum in the lift
Answer: (c)
Explanation:
Using Pascal’s principle, a small force on a small area can balance a large force on a larger area due to force multiplication.
Case Study Question 2
Passage:
A steel ball is dropped into glycerine and reaches terminal velocity after some time. The student is asked to understand how viscous force acts and how terminal velocity is calculated using Stokes’ Law:
$$
v_t=\frac{2 r^2(\rho-\sigma) g}{9 \eta}
$$
Where $\rho=$ density of ball, $\sigma=$ density of fluid, $\eta=$ viscosity, $r=$ radius.
Q1. What forces act on the ball during free fall in a viscous fluid?
(a) Gravitational, Viscous, Buoyant
(b) Only gravity
(c) Magnetic and electrical
(d) Normal force and tension
Answer: (a)
Explanation:
Three forces:
- Downward: Weight
- Upward: Buoyant force + viscous force
Q2. What happens to the velocity of the ball just after release?
(a) Becomes constant immediately
(b) First increases, then becomes constant
(c) Always decreases
(d) Remains zero
Answer: (b)
Explanation:
Ball accelerates at first, but viscous drag increases with speed → finally reaches terminal velocity
Q3. How does terminal velocity depend on radius of the ball?
(a) $v_t \propto r$
(b) $v_t \propto r^2$
(c) $v_t \propto \frac{1}{r}$
(d) $v_t \propto r^3$
Answer: (b)
Explanation:
From Stokes’ Law:
$$
v_t \propto r^2
$$
Q4. Why does a smaller particle fall more slowly in viscous fluid?
(a) Smaller mass
(b) Less gravitational pull
(c) Smaller radius → lower terminal velocity
(d) More density
Answer: (c)
Explanation:
Smaller radius → much lower vt → falls more slowly.
