Case Study Questions on Magnetism and Matter

Question 1:

Matter is composed of atoms. In atoms there are negatively charged electrons which revolve around the positively charged nucleus. Each of such electron is equivalent to a tiny current loop with which a certain magnetic dipole moment is associated. Electrons not only revolve around the nucleus but also spin upon their own axis. This spin motion of electrons also produce some dipole moment.
It is assumed that dipole moment associated with the spin motion dominates over that associated with the revolving motion.
Atoms of some substances contain even number of electrons, out of which half spin anti-clockwise and half spin clockwise. Such substances are called diamagnetic substances. On the other hand there are some substances in which atoms contain odd number of electrons.
In such a case the number of electrons spinning in one direction is one greater than the number of electrons spinning in other direction. These substances are called paramagnetic substances.

A10: The random orientation and motion, which is responsible for demagnetization, is less at lower temperature. This is the basis of Curie-Weiss law.
