Model Essay

The corridor of the school was deserted, except for a maid sweeping the day’s litter in the long corridor. Outside I could hear the cries of hawkers and the honking of vehicles, which mingled to provide a somewhat pleasant drone. In the empty classroom, the only sound was that of my voice explaining the intricacies of trigonometry. My assignment was not obligatory and my student was not an anonymous person. He was my classmate and soon to be my best friend Amit.

I had known Amit from my kindergarten days. Though we studied in the same class he rarely spoke to me. He was a shy introvert boy, who rarely mingled with other boys, mostly keeping to himself. Unfortunately, for him while coming to school on his bicycle, he was knocked down by a car and suffered multiple fractures on his left leg. This kept him away from school for well over two months, thereby severely affecting his studies.

Like Amit, I too had undergone a similar experience, when I was in Class IV. The physical pain and the added depression of losing a year had made my life miserable. Fortunately for me, my elder brother helped me in academics, bringing notes from my friends and coaching me, as I lay confined to my bed. Reflecting on those miserable days I felt a strong urge to help Amit in the final year examination, which was just a month away. It was indeed a challenge, which Amit did not have to face alone.

We started meeting in the classroom every day after school. I updated him with my notes, also explaining the complex concepts of trigonometry and algebra, which was my forte. While my sole intention was to update him in academics, I also discovered that we had many things in common. I learnt that like me, he too played cricket and was an ardent admirer of Mahinder Singh Dhoni. He liked watching movies and often to break the monotony, we would share a joke on the latest movies in town. I loved teaching him and I could tell he appreciated my unconditional support. In this process he overcame his shyness, thereby becoming more vocal and affable.

Watching him limp out from the examination hall, a big broad smile on his face, made me feel happy and content. This is for I knew I had done something more than help Amit pass the examination. I had helped someone in need of help and in the process forged a lifelong friendship.

Practice tip: Study how the essay first explains the friend’s difficulty, then gives a believable reason for helping, describes the actual help in detail, and finally shows how the situation and friendship improved. For your own practice, aim for approximately 300–350 words.

Understanding This Composition

1

The opening begins with action

The composition opens inside an almost empty classroom while the narrator is already helping Amit with trigonometry. This gives the reader an immediate scene before the essay moves back to explain why the help was needed.

2

The problem is explained clearly

Amit’s accident and long absence from school establish the difficulty. The essay does not simply say that a friend was in trouble; it explains the cause and shows how the accident affected his studies.

3

Personal experience creates believable motivation

The narrator remembers having faced a similar problem in Class IV and recalls how an elder brother provided help. This makes the decision to support Amit feel natural and gives the narrative an emotional reason for the action.

4

The help is shown through specific actions

The narrator shares notes, explains difficult Mathematics concepts and spends time with Amit after school. These concrete actions answer the important part of the prompt asking what was done to make the situation better.

5

The conclusion shows a result beyond academic success

The final paragraph does more than suggest that Amit could complete the examination. It shows that the experience helped him become more confident and also transformed two classmates into close friends.
