BOARD-EXAM PAGE
Class 12 Physics should be prepared from the current CBSE syllabus + official SQP
Unlike Class 11, Class 12 Physics is assessed through the CBSE board examination. Use the current syllabus for topic boundaries, the official Sample Question Paper for paper structure, and the official Marking Scheme after attempting the sample paper. Older notes can still be useful, but only after checking that the topic remains in the 2026–27 course.

THEORY WEIGHTAGE
CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit Groups and Marks
CBSE assigns marks to groups of units, not fixed chapter-wise marks.
UnitsCoverageMarks
I–II Electrostatics + Current Electricity 16
III–IV Magnetic Effects of Current & Magnetism + Electromagnetic Induction & Alternating Currents 17
V–VI Electromagnetic Waves + Optics 18
VII–VIII Dual Nature of Radiation & Matter + Atoms & Nuclei 12
IX Electronic Devices 7

🎯
DO NOT TURN UNIT MARKS INTO FAKE CHAPTER WEIGHTAGE
The 18 marks assigned to Units V–VI, for example, cover Electromagnetic Waves and both Optics chapters together. It does not guarantee a fixed number of marks from each individual chapter in every board paper.

2026–27 BOARD-PAPER FORMAT
33 Questions • 70 Marks • 3 Hours
The official Physics SQP uses five compulsory sections.
SectionQuestion TypeTotal Marks
A12 MCQs + 4 Assertion–Reason questions × 1 mark16
B5 questions × 2 marks10
C7 questions × 3 marks21
D2 case-study questions × 4 marks8

How to use the official SQP:

Do not read the marking scheme first. Attempt the paper under a three-hour limit, then compare your solution steps with the official marking scheme. Record whether each lost mark came from concept, formula choice, vector/sign convention, algebra, diagram, graph, unit or incomplete explanation.

PRACTICAL PHYSICS
30 Marks — Experiments, Record, Activity, Project and Viva
The practical component is large enough to prepare throughout the session, not only at the end.

Practical record — experiments and activities5
One activity from either section3

Viva on experiments, activities and project5

📓
PRACTICAL RECORD REQUIREMENT
The current course requires records of at least 8 experiments with 4 from each section, at least 6 activities with 3 from each section, and the investigatory-project report. For every experiment, understand the circuit/ray diagram, apparatus, formula, observations, graph or calculation, result, precautions and common viva questions.

QUICK DIAGNOSTIC
Check Six Board-Level Physics Foundations
Original XAM CONTENT questions — attempt before opening the answer.
1. If the separation between two point charges is doubled, what happens to the electrostatic force between them?

Answer: It becomes one-fourth, because Coulomb force varies as 1/r².

2. A 12 V source is connected across a 6 Ω resistor. Find the current.

Answer: 2 A, using I = V/R.

3. Why does a magnetic field do no work on a charged particle when only magnetic force acts?

Answer: Magnetic force is perpendicular to the instantaneous velocity, so it changes the direction of motion but not the particle’s kinetic energy.

4. What happens at resonance in a series LCR circuit?

Answer: Inductive and capacitive reactances are equal, the impedance is minimum and the current is maximum for the applied voltage.

5. Why does increasing frequency increase the energy of a photon?

Answer: Photon energy is E = hν, so energy is directly proportional to frequency.

6. In forward bias, why does a p–n junction diode conduct much more strongly than in reverse bias?

Answer: Forward bias reduces the junction barrier and narrows the depletion region, allowing majority carriers to cross the junction more easily.

BOARD REVISION ROUTE
Concept → Numerical → Diagram/Graph → Competency → Timed Paper
Step 1
Lock the current syllabus: remove deleted/out-of-scope material from your revision checklist.
Step 2
Revise NCERT concepts, examples and standard derivations: know the assumptions and conditions behind every result.
Step 3
Practise numericals: write the governing relation, substitution, calculation and final unit clearly.
Step 4
Practise diagrams and graphs: circuit diagrams, ray diagrams, field patterns and graphs should be reproducible without copying.
Step 5
Add competency practice: solve XAM CONTENT Case Study questions and available Assertion–Reason sets after chapter revision.
Step 6
Finish with timed papers: use the official SQP first, then PYQs, and correct them with a marking-scheme/error-log method.
