CLASS 11 IS NOT A CLASS 12 BOARD EXAM
Use CBSE for the curriculum; follow your school for the final Class XI paper
CBSE specifies the Class XI Physics curriculum and practical requirements, but the Class XI annual examination is conducted at school level rather than as the national Class XII board examination. Your school’s paper can vary in question mix and internal choices, so use the current syllabus as the content boundary and your school’s instructions for the exact examination format.

USE WEIGHTAGE AS A PLANNING TOOL, NOT A CHAPTER-SKIPPING TOOL
The marks above are assigned to groups of units, not guaranteed chapter-by-chapter marks in every school examination. Build complete conceptual coverage first, then give extra revision time to the larger unit groups and your own weak areas.

OLDER NUMBERING CAN STILL APPEAR ON LEGACY PAGES
Earlier NCERT editions included a separate introductory chapter before Units and Measurements. Some older XAM CONTENT Assertion–Reason titles or URLs may therefore show Units and Measurements as Chapter 2 or Motion in a Straight Line as Chapter 3. For 2026–27, use the chapter names and numbering on this hub as the current reference.

HOW TO STUDY PHYSICS
Theory → Representation → Equation → Numerical → Explanation
Class 11 Physics becomes easier when every chapter is studied through multiple representations.
1CONCEPTUnderstand the physical idea firstKnow what the quantity, law or model means before inserting numbers into a formula.
2REPRESENTATIONDraw the diagram, graph or free-body pictureTranslate the situation into a visual model before choosing equations.
3MATHEMATICSTrack symbols, signs and unitsDefine variables, select a positive direction and keep dimensional consistency visible.
4APPLICATIONMove from direct to unfamiliar questionsAfter NCERT-style questions, use MCQs, case studies and reasoning questions to test transfer of concepts.

PRACTICAL PHYSICS
30 Marks — Prepare Throughout the Year
The current practical requirement includes experiments, activities, an investigatory project, record work and viva.
Practical ComponentMarks
Two experiments — one from each section7 + 7
Practical record — experiments and activities5
One activity from either section3
Investigatory project3
Viva on experiments, activities and project5

Practical record requirement:

The current curriculum requires a record of at least 8 experiments with 4 from each section, at least 6 activities with 3 from each section, and the report of the investigatory project. Prepare the apparatus, formula, observation method, graph or calculation, result and likely viva questions while doing each practical.

QUICK DIAGNOSTIC
Check Six Foundation Skills
These are original XAM CONTENT questions. Attempt before opening the answer.
1. A measurement is written as 12.40 cm. How many significant figures does it contain?

Answer: Four. The trailing zero after the decimal point is significant.

2. A car changes velocity from 10 m/s to 22 m/s in 4 s. What is its average acceleration?

Answer: 3 m/s², because a = (22 − 10)/4.

3. A net force of 18 N acts on a 6 kg body. Find its acceleration.

Answer: 3 m/s² from F = ma.

4. What happens to gravitational force if the distance between two point masses is doubled?

Answer: It becomes one-fourth because gravitational force varies inversely as the square of separation.

5. Why is the area under a pressure–volume graph important in a thermodynamic process?

Answer: For a quasistatic process, the area under the P–V curve represents the work associated with the volume change, with sign determined by the chosen convention and direction of the process.

6. In simple harmonic motion, where is the speed maximum?

Answer: At the mean position, where the displacement from equilibrium is zero.

REVISION ROUTE
A Better Way to Revise Class 11 Physics
Step 1
Read the current syllabus: know the exact topic boundary before studying from older notes or videos.
Step 2
Study NCERT concepts and examples: especially definitions, graphs, assumptions and standard derivations.
Step 3
Solve numericals without looking at solutions: write known data, target quantity, model/equation, working and unit.
Step 4
Add competency practice: use MCQs, Assertion–Reason and Case Study questions after conceptual revision.
Step 5
Keep an error log: separate concept errors from algebra, sign, vector, graph and unit errors.
Step 6
Retest after a gap: solve a fresh question rather than rereading the same solution.

FAQ
CBSE Class 11 Physics 2026–27
How many chapters are there in CBSE Class 11 Physics for 2026–27?

The current CBSE theory curriculum contains 14 chapters, beginning with Units and Measurements and ending with Waves.

What are the Class 11 Physics theory and practical marks?

The current curriculum allocates 70 marks to theory and 30 marks to practical assessment.

Is there a CBSE Class 11 board exam like Class 12?

No national Class XI board examination is conducted like the Class XII board examination. Schools conduct the Class XI annual assessment while following the prescribed CBSE curriculum.
