Q. 4. Boojho says that many of my classmates have a hoarse voice. why?
Ans. At puberty, the voice box or the larynx begins to grow. Boys develop larger voice box. Sometimes, the muscles of the growing voice box go out of control and the voice becomes hoarse. This state may remain for a few days or weeks after which the voice becomes normal.

Q. 5. Boojho and Paheli wish to know what initiates changes at puberty.
Ans. Endocrine gland (pituitary gland) stimulates the testes in boys and ovaries in girls to release testosterone (in males) and estrogen (in females). These hormones are released in blood stream and reach the target site to stimulate changes at puberty.

Q. 6. Paheli says that the reproductive life of a woman lasts from menarche to menopause. Is she right?
Ans. Yes, she is right. In females, the reproductive phase of life begins at puberty and generally lasts till the age of 45 to 50 years. Ovum matures and if fertilisation does not occur, the released egg and the thickened lining of the uterus, along with blood is shed off is called menstruation. The first flow is termed menarche and the stoppage of this bleeding in women is called menopause.
Q. 7. Paheli heard her mother and her aunt talking about her cousin who is going to have a baby. They were discussing whether she would give birth to a boy or a girl. She wonders what makes the fertilised egg develop either into a boy or a girl! (Easy)
Ans The thread-like structures called chromosomes present in fertilised egg determine the sex of the baby.
