Model Story

Looking out of the window I saw a thick fog hang outside my room. In the dim moonlight, the fog looked like clouds, descending on the earth. How I wished I could go out and savour the beauty of the night, but here I was trying to catch some sleep, which eluded me. I felt restless twisting and turning in the bed. Sleep seemed to elude me.

I paced the floor of my room, clutching the shawl to keep myself warm. Bored, I switched on the television to watch a movie, ‘Mars Attack’ on the channel. It was an exciting movie of strange unpredictable creatures from Mars, landing on the earth. They were welcomed by the American President and the people. However, releasing a pigeon as a sign of peace on the occasion, led to a great misunderstanding. They turned violent causing great destruction to life and property, across the world. Situation turned grave as they destroyed buildings and historic monuments, across the world. Just when the situation seemed hopeless, a typical classical music played by a musician, made them flee the earth. The movie kept me spell bound, after which I stretched out on the bed and fell fast asleep.

Soon I heard a knock on the door. On opening it I found a strange looking boy, who had sticking out of his head two antenna like objects, over a hairy body. His owl like yellow round eyes, resembled the characters I had just seen in the movie. I screamed in fright, but he said something in an alien language, at the same time gesticulating with his hands, indicating that he meant no harm. I stared at him in disbelief, unable to even scream. Sensing my fright, he gave me an object that looked like a translator, to put on my ears, so that I could understand his language. Putting it on my ears I learnt that he had come from the planet Mars. He wanted to take me to his friends and show me his planet. I politely refused, telling him that I had my Maths exams the very next day and hence could not oblige. He extended his thin wiry like hand in friendship, wary of him, I chose to do namaste instead. He sounded friendly, but I was scared, for I knew not what would offend him.

He talked about life in Mars, telling me that it was bigger than the Earth, and had its own solar system. People there do not eat food, they survive on noble gases, which are there in abundance. Seeing that I was impressed, he continued to brag about the superiority of his race. I bore with it for some time. However unable to take it any longer, I politely requested him to let me sleep, for I had to wake up early, to attend school.

On hearing this he reacted with alacrity. Snatching the translator from my hand, he pointed his gun at me and in a flash I was in flames. I screamed with all my might, “Help, Help, this boy from Mars will kill me.” I suddenly felt a splash of cold water on my face. Opening my eyes I saw my mother peering down at me, “What’s the matter son” said she. I was greatly relieved to see her and realise that it was all but a dream.

Practice tip: In imaginative writing, unusual ideas still need a clear sequence. Establish the ordinary setting first, introduce the extraordinary event, let the characters interact naturally, and make the ending resolve or transform the situation.
💡

Understanding This Story

1

The real-world setting comes first

The story begins with fog, moonlight, cold weather and sleeplessness. A familiar setting makes the later appearance of the alien feel more striking.

2

The film prepares the fantasy logically

The narrator watches a film about creatures from Mars immediately before falling asleep. This gives the dream a natural psychological trigger and links the fantasy with what the narrator has just experienced.

3

Visual details make the alien memorable

The antenna-like objects, hairy body and round yellow eyes provide a quick visual picture. In imaginative writing, a few distinctive details are usually stronger than a long catalogue of features.

4

Conversation builds the imagined world

The translator allows the narrator and visitor to communicate, and the alien describes life on Mars. Dialogue and interaction can reveal an imaginary world more naturally than a separate block of explanation.

5

The ending uses a sudden reversal

The threatening moment is interrupted by cold water and the narrator wakes to see his mother. The reveal explains the impossible events as a dream and brings the story back to reality.
