About NEET
Introduction to NEET
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a highly competitive entrance examination in India for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate medical courses (MBBS) and dental courses (BDS) in government or private medical colleges and dental colleges across India. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), NEET is the gateway for students to secure admission to prestigious medical institutions.
History and Evolution of NEET
- Inception: NEET was introduced by the Government of India in 2013, replacing the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and other state-level medical entrance exams.
- Purpose: The primary objective of NEET is to standardize the admission process, ensuring transparency and reducing the burden of multiple entrance exams on students.
Eligibility Criteria
To appear for NEET, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Nationality: Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Foreign Nationals are eligible.
- Age Limit: The minimum age limit is 17 years as of December 31 of the year of admission. The upper age limit is 25 years for general category candidates and 30 years for reserved category candidates.
- Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed or be appearing in the 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects. They must have secured a minimum of 50% marks (40% for reserved categories) in the qualifying examination.
Exam Pattern and Syllabus
- Exam Pattern:
- Mode: Offline (Pen and Paper-based)
- Duration: 3 hours
- Sections: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology)
- Total Questions: 180 (45 questions each from Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology)
- Marking Scheme: +4 for each correct answer, -1 for each incorrect answer, and 0 for unanswered questions.
- Syllabus: NEET syllabus is based on the NCERT curriculum of Class 11 and Class 12. The detailed syllabus includes:
- Physics: Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrodynamics, Modern Physics, Optics, etc.
- Chemistry: Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry
- Biology: Cell Structure, Genetics, Human Physiology, Plant Physiology, Ecology, etc.
Preparation Tips and Strategies
- Understand the Syllabus: Familiarize yourself with the entire syllabus and focus on important topics.
- Create a Study Plan: Make a realistic and balanced study plan, allocating time for each subject.

NEET Application Process
- Registration: Candidates need to register on the official NTA NEET website.
- Application Form: Fill in personal, academic, and contact details.
- Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of photograph, signature, and other required documents.
- Application Fee: Pay the application fee online via debit/credit card or net banking.
- Confirmation: After successful payment, download and print the confirmation page for future reference.
NEET Admit Card and Exam Day Guidelines
- Admit Card: Download the admit card from the official website and check for any discrepancies.
- Exam Day Guidelines:
- Reporting Time: Arrive at the exam center well before the reporting time.
- Documents: Carry the admit card, a valid photo ID, and passport-sized photographs.
- Dress Code: Follow the prescribed dress code (light clothes with half sleeves, no shoes, etc.)
- Prohibited Items: Do not carry electronic gadgets, calculators, study materials, etc.
NEET Results and Counseling
- Results: NEET results are usually declared a few weeks after the exam. Candidates can check their results on the official website by entering their roll number and date of birth.
- Counseling:
- All India Quota Counseling: Conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) for 15% of the total seats.
- State Quota Counseling: Conducted by respective state authorities for 85% of the seats.
- Document Verification: Candidates need to appear for document verification with original certificates.
